The world of business is a lot like the world of sports. There are winners and there are losers. There are no “tweeners.” Or at least, there shouldn’t be.
A tweener (in-betweener) is someone who just manages to get by, flying under the radar. He or she doesn’t make waves but doesn’t create any if you understand what that means. And that kind of person will never push your business over the top.
In a championship game, like the Super Bowl, there is one winner and one loser. The winner reaps the benefits of a great season or game, both in accolades for the team, endorsements, and winning shares, i.e. money. The loser learns what they need to work on to get better and make it to the Super Bowl again. They have gained invaluable knowledge that not many other teams are able to get. So in a sense, they have won, too.
Notice that there is no tweener in the Super Bowl.
Winners are great – bring them on! But it’s not so bad to have a few losers, people who you can let go to make room for your next superstar or who are willing to learn from their mistakes and become your next superstar. There’s a good chance you won’t even notice the tweeners, and they can do the most damage to your business.
Don’t let your business or your team members simply coast. If you’re not moving forward, you’re falling back.
